This is more of a personal choice. Each form of music is different from the other, and one can decide based on what sounds better to them. We advise you to take up the music form that you like listening to as listening is one of the most important components of learning how to sing.
To understand the difference between Hindustani and Carnatic forms of Indian Classical Music, watch this video where Shankar Mahadevan explains the key differences between the two forms: https://vimeo.com/290630116
A child can start from the age of 5 for a Hindustani Vocals or a Carnatic Vocals course.
For toddlers (2.5 - 4 years), we have a course called Rhymes to Swaras (RTS). At this point, what we wish to encourage is active listening in children. So we take familiar Rhymes or tunes that the child listens to and break it down to the corresponding Swaras (notes) or Solfege. This helps the child make a connection between melody and notes.
For children who are older (4+ to 8), we have a course called Grow with Music. Grow with Music or GWM has two primary approaches :
If your child is older than 5 and you want them to take up music in the long term as well, we would recommend taking up either Hindustani or Carnatic vocals for children. These courses would introduce the child to concepts in Indian classical music. However, the songs and compositions selected would be much lighter and appeal to children. They will continue to learn the basics in each class, and learn how to apply those concepts in the songs they learn.
For children, we will have group classes.
The class size for an HV or CV children’s course would be 3 to 7.
The class size for a GWM course would be 6-10.
If you are a beginner, and wish to take up music for a longer term, I would recommend you take up our Hindustani Vocals or Carnatic Vocals (depending on your preference).
With our Hindustani Vocals 101 course, you will acquire the ability to use basic elements of music (melody and rhythm) to improvise musical phrases. This course will lay the foundation for acquiring clarity of voice and teach how to focus on the stability of the note and match pitch perfectly with the Tanpura. During the course you will also learn a devotional song, a folk song and a Bandish in Raaga Bhupali
Carnatic Vocals 101 is a foundation course for students. With this course, the student would be able to understand the concept of Pitch (shruthi) and Notes and identify them, learn the basic Swara patterns (saralivarisais) and also the Ragams along with their scales. You will also learn two Nottu Swarams.
If you are not yet sure of jumping into a classical vocal course, check out our light music courses - Hindi Movie Songs or Devotional Songs.
This course is aimed at beginners who wish to learn light music. Learn the basics of singing and 2 Hindi Movie Songs with Sargams to get the right pitch and inflections of singing these songs - the class chooses the songs from a specified list.
A course will typically have 12 sessions with classes held once a week. Each session is 45 mins in duration. However, you do have the option of paying for monthly or 4 sessions. Please check with our admissions team or with our centre coordinator for details of the fees.
We understand that every student learns differently. We want all our students to learn at their own pace and time. Although we have divided our course into 12 sessions, the idea behind that is to give a structure to the learning, not to restrict the student from exploring at their pace.
If you take up individual classes, you can take additional classes to learn a concept more thoroughly. Our instructors, along with giving you regular feedback, will do a mid-course review and a summative review for you. As part of the mid-course review, they will let you know about your progress, what are your areas of strengths and weaknesses.
Group classes don’t have the option of additional classes, so if you feel you require personalized attention from your instructors, we advise you to sign up for individual classes.
Every student of Shankar Mahadevan Academy gets a student account on signing up. We provide you the learning materials in the form of an Online Music Book - OM BookTM. An OM Book has audio and video content, lyrics, notations and any concept you are learning in class. Your OM Book also allows you to send recordings to your teacher for feedback. Through your account you can also submit assessments and check your grades and progress.
Yes, our courses such Hindustani and Carnatic vocals are certification courses where you receive grades and a certificate. Other courses - such as Hindi Movie Songs, Grow with Music and Rhymes to Swaras are courses that provide participation certificates to students. All certificates bear the signature of Shankar Mahadevan.
